Welcome to the website of the BIOMASS Energy Centre

The Biomass Energy Centre is the UK government information centre for the use of biomass for energy in the UK

Biomass Supplier List launched

The Biomass Suppliers List (BSL) was launched 30th April 2014. This is the list of suppliers of woodfuel who have been accredited as demonstrating that their fuel meets the sustainability criteria required under the RHI. Recipients of the new Domestic RHI will be obliged to source their fuel from suppliers on the BSL unless they are supplying themself. Recipients of the non-domestic RHI may also use the BSL as the easiest way to demonstrate compliance, but may also demonstrate the sustainability of their fuel in other ways. For more information, and a link to the BSL, visit our RHI page.

The Biomass Energy Centre Enquiry Service - Closed

Funding for the Biomass Energy Centre Enquiry Service has now come to an end. It is therefore with great regret that we announce that we are unable to continue to provide this service. We hope that this website, and the literature and links available through it, will continue to provide information and answer any questions you may have.

What is biomass?

Biomass is biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. In the context of biomass for energy this is often used to mean plant based material, but biomass can equally apply to both animal and vegetable derived material. (more )

Why use biomass?

Biomass is a renewable, low carbon fuel that is already widely available throughout the UK. Its production and use also brings additional environmental and social benefits. Correctly managed, biomass is a sustainable fuel that can deliver a significant reduction in net carbon emissions when compared with fossil fuels. (more )

But is it sustainable?

There is no reason why the production and use of biomass can't be sustainable. The main source of biomass in the UK is timber from forestry, which falls under the remit of the Forestry Act (1967). You can find out more about forestry regulation here, or biomass sustainability here.

About Us

The Biomass Energy Centre is a technical information centre based within Forest Research, the research agency of the Forestry Commission, we supply impartial information on biomass system installation, fuel production, handling and supply chains.

Popular Tools

RHI Calculator
Government support is available towards running costs. BEC has produced a new upgraded version of our RHI calculator tool (v6.2 2/2014) to work out what support you could be entitled to.

Fuel cost comparisons
Want to compare the cost of biomass with your existing fuel type? We have a comparison of fuel prices in p/kWh to give you an indication of the savings you could be making.

Fuel suppliers database
Worried about where you can get fuel from? Have a look at out woodfuel suppliers database the most comprehensive database of solid biomass suppliers in the UK .
